DAILY VISITORS ...GO TO LAST SEVEN ENTRIES

I hope you find some useful information here...I will be adding daily as I grow this years WINNER!!..LOLOL

My husand ...Dennis and I are members of the C.J. Pumpkin club....In our area... A hand full of us entered the Sarnia weigh off 1998...and we placed 15th....We were estatic with our showing and our trophy...This was our FIRST YEAR GROWING...2 other members took 13th..and 14th trophies

I live in Southwestern Ontario Canada... close to the shores of Lake Erie...about 45 min.from Windsor

We have warm summer days ...and usually cool evenings due to our lake location. Usually always a constant wind...and late and early frosts. Our soil or course is that lovely CLAY...So as you follow my journal...Please keep in mind what works for me ..May not work for you.

I would apppreciate any and all feed backs on my journal...and any and all tips or info would be helpful.

I will start my journal with our last years pumpkin...and Fall Patch preparation.

1998 PUMPKIN:( I NAMED "ROID") SEED:..935...GEORGE LLOYD....

MY RESULTS:

516.9 LBS...15th Sarnia/....3rd C.J Club/...3rd Sykes weigh off/ See photos..#1../#2..#3..#4..

PROBLEMS I RAN INTO;

June 30 1998

HAIL...this storm destroyed every leaf ...I had holes the size of quarters threw out my main...and damaged to my first set pumpkin to the point it had to be removed. It took the remaining plant almost 3 weeks to re-coop.. and then I had to get another set pumpkin....I managed to grow 2 pumpkins off this plant with all the damage... 1 @ 516.9lbs....2 @ 302lbs... I consider my self lucky . So I was behind about 3 weeks in comparison to the other growers...I can't help wonder ...WHAT IF ???? AS WE ALL HAVE???

1998 FALL PATCH PREPARATION:

As I mentioned we have that wonderful CLAY soil...so to remedy this ..we had 34 tons of sandy loam trucked in.. And we had to wheel barrel every pound..now you know the reason for the Pumpkins name...lolol Our base ...clay and gravel..was hand dug to 2 ft deep...the sandy loam added and turned in...to this we added peatmoss / horse manure w/ straw...bovine manure..fire pit ashes../ and all the chipper shredder materials we could find...this was all turned in...by hand again.. to winter.... I could not locate winter rye seed for a cover crop...any -one who has any info on where I can purchase this please let me know.

1999 SPRING PATCH PREPARATION:

APRIL 15 1999

I have been doing my own soil testing with a kit....my Ph seems to be good... We have hand dug the patch again...and expanded it...I even have an expendable vegetable garden if I need the space.....!@#$%^&* we have added 2lbs of sodium nitrate...and roto tilled... this time...(I'm gonna buy one of these).

JOURNAL

APRIL 30 1999

Have loosely worked the soil again... and mounded a section for my seeds...I have layed a solar cover over the mound to maintain the heat.Nights are still plenty cold. I have added ground heaters... I am planting direct this year..to avoid the growth time lost from transplanting. A mini make shift green house is in place.

MAY 5 1999

I harvested 200 mature seeds from my pumpkin last year..I am planting 10 ...hopefully a few will come up. I have picked 10...filed the tips ...and placed them between a wet paper towel and put them on top of the fridge..to keep warm. I have mailed out seeds to P.E.I./ OHIO /PENN./ waiting for a feed back on their progress.A few local growers...also have a few of my seeds.

MAY 8 1999

All I have been able to do is keep the seeds moist... been hectic ...my daughter has had her baby. 4 of the seeds are showing root growth.

MAY 9 1999

I have planted all 10 seeds today... Used Dampen off on the soil.

MAY 12 1999

7 of the 10 seeds are up...Using warm water to water with.

MAY 13 1999

The other 3 seeds are up as well.....10 out of 10!!! Temperatures are varying from high 70's to low 40's... ground heaters still on....venting threw the day time to control moisture and heat.

MAY 15 1999

Our club pumpkin seed party to-night..... My first 7 have budded their next leaves.Continuing warm water.

MAY 16 1999

SEEDS from our clubs:Random draw: SEED#1... KEENS...775 lb SEED#2... TODD KLINE(97)....787lb... (1006(97)GREER)....(727(96)GREER) Soaking these same as above.

MAY 17 1999

Second set of leaves are out....fertlizing with 10/52/30 I have already picked the 2 plants I am keeping...will cull the rest.Day temps still in the 70's nights still too cool ...low 40's .Ground heaters still going.

MAY 19 1999

I have decided to give my 2 keepers some extra room...I am taking out 8 of the plants...but will keep them in large pots in my greenhouse...just in case????

MAY 20 1999

Using a combination ...insecticide...fungicide..(floritect)...Temperatures outside ....highs today ...MID 70'S Have planted Seeds # 1 /#2 ...in their own mound covered with a solar blanket.....These will be my pollinators....I will be culling one of these as well...

I shall refer to my seeds as SEED/PLANT #1....Keens SEED/PLANT #2....Greer SEED/PLANT #3....Roid2 SEED/PLANT #4....Roid3

MAY 23 1999

Started 4th set of leaves.....using MIRACLE GROW....warm watering.....been very cool.....mid ..50's...and raining.Ground heaters still on.

MAY 25 1999

I turned the soil heaters off last night....it was cool...mid..40's again...but I dug down in the soil ...soil is too dry... and a bit too warm...adding a heat lamp now instead....I have a propane heater...but don't like the idea..of letting it run unattended overnite.. Heavy warm water watering Sending 4 of my culled potted plants to members of the CJ club...their seeds didn't make it. Plants looking real Good.COULD USE SOME SUN!!

MAY 27 1999

Finally the sun is out....and it is going to be a warm one today....I rolled the top back on the green house...to expose all the plants this am:...I prefer the am...sun...as not to burn or wilt the tender leaves at this young stage of growth... I fertilized with MIRACLE GROW again....It may seem like a lot of fertilizing....however ..now with the sandy loam soil.... I fertilize more often instead of increasing the fertilizer amount....Sandy loam tends to allow quite a bit of leeching.

MAY 28 1999

It has been perfect pumpkin weather..hot days ...evenings...not too cool... I fertilized again today with MIRACLE Grow..I should say this evening. Leaves not as dark as I like...have 6 good size leaves now..Roid 3...Roid 4...starting to lie down...won't be long until they are off and running. Seed#1 & #2 have not come up....I will give them until tomorrow...will have to find a cross pollinator from the club.

MAY 30 1999

Very hot today, watering quite a lot insecticided as well...plants doing great ROID 2 LAYING DOWN NOW getting ready to vine out And it begins
